Skat Practice Quizzes

Reading the rules is one thing; seeing whether they stuck is another. These are three short puzzles with a fresh random question every time and an explanation after each answer. They use the same rules as the main guide and the game value calculator.

What is this game worth?

Matadors are counted from the cards shown, which are all the cards you hold. In a real game the two Skat cards count too. New to "with" and "without"? See the worked example.

The rules these quizzes use

  • Suit and Grand: the four Jacks are always the top trump, in the order ♣ ♠ ♥ ♦. In a Suit game, every card of the chosen suit is trump too, ranked A, 10, K, Q, 9, 8, 7 below the Jacks. In Grand, only the Jacks are trump.
  • Plain suits rank A, 10, K, Q, 9, 8, 7. The Jack is not part of its suit any more, so the Jack of Hearts does not follow Hearts.
  • Null has no trump. Cards rank A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, and the Jack is an ordinary card of its suit.
  • Following suit: you must play the led suit (or trump, if trump was led) when you can. If you can't, you may play anything.
  • Game value is the base value (Diamonds 9, Hearts 10, Spades 11, Clubs 12, Grand 24) times a multiplier of matadors + 1 + one for each bonus. Hand, Schneider and Schwarz are the bonuses in these puzzles. Null is a fixed 23, 35, 46 or 59.

More detail is on the ranked cards section of the main guide, in the bidding guide, and in the glossary. A printable cheat sheet has all the numbers on one page.

Practice with real cards

The Blue Rings deck prints which cards are trump on the card itself, so the Jack puzzles above take care of themselves at the table.
